Front Load Dumpsters
Scheduled business waste collection is best handled with a front load dumpster. Front Loads (or FL’s for short) are the small box shaped bins you typically see in alleys or in a dedicated enclosure. These bins are also used for the collection of cardboard, comingled, or organic material for recycling. Garbage is brought out by employees, and thrown into the bin on a regular basis. The size of dumpster bin provided and the frequency of service is dependant on some general factors such as available room, how many employees you have, the type of waste stream being generated, and whether the hauler has other stops in the area.
Front Load BinS Characteristics:
- Permanent, Scheduled service on a contract basis
- Dumpsters stay onsite for length of service contract (typically 3-5 years)
- Business Waste / Commercial Waste is the primary usage
- Perfect for managing Solid Waste and Recycling
- Typically found in alleys, behind buildings etc.
- 1 cubic yard to 8 cubic yards in volume
- Weight allowances vary, but generally limited to under 1500 lbs per lift
- Footprint varies by design, average is 5 x 4 feet
- Compact size, often has wheels underneath
- Requires unobstructed space for truck to access and lift bin
- Lifted and emptied onsite, then replaced

Front load dumpsters are typically serviced on set days by a collection truck that lifts the bins with a set of forks and empties it into the truck body. The bins are then replaced on the ground, and the truck moves on to the next service site. Front load dumpsters typically range in size from 2 to 8 yards, and may come with a lid and or wheels. If a business generates larger volumes of waste (like manufacturing firms), they may utilize a roll off waste container in addition to front load bins.
Depending on where in North America you are located, you may see also “rear load” dumpster bins, which are about the same size as most smaller front load containers. These dumpsters utilize a rear loading collection and compaction system to empty the bins. The trucks look very similar to the collection trucks where a driver and loading team of two would travel door to door throwing bags into the rear of the truck. But in this case, they use a set of forks or winch to empty the bins into the compactor hopper. Regardless, the end result is the same…scheduled collection on a regular basis.
Waste Contract Pitfalls
Commercial front load bins for business waste are provided on a contract basis, which range from 3 to 5 years. It’s easy to sign a waste service contract when the dollar value is a fraction of your monthly site operating costs. Most people don’t give their dumpsters a second thought. After all, it’s only trash, right? Wrong! Those agreements can be some of the most restrictive and one sided contracts you’ll ever sign. Worse, they can be particularly difficult to get out of once you have signed the contract.
The agreements typically favor the hauler, not the customer…and the waste companies know that you’re likely not going to read the contract fine print. Waste can be a complicated business, especially when you are dealing with multi year service contracts. But it doesn’t have to be. Waste in Motion makes it simple.
